Who was Pablo Picasso? Good, he was an artist. Repeat after me, Picasso. Very good. Where would you go today to see some of Picasso's artwork? Yes, a museum. Raise your hand if you have been to a museum. Wow, that's great! Well, Pablo Picasso was born in 1881 in Spain. Point to Spain on the map please. (Call on student to go to the map). Now, point out where we are in Philadelphia. Thank you. What language do they speak in Spain? Good, Spanish. Who knows how to say something in Spanish? Thank you. Picasso loved art at a very young age. His father was an art teacher who recognized his talent and supported him along this journey to becoming an artist. We know he became very famous and lived until 1973. How old was Picasso when he died if he was born in 1881? Good, 92 years old. One time he was talking to a friend, he said, "Give me a museum and I'll fill it." That's what we are going to do today. We are going to create works of art for your museum. Picasso liked to draw portraits. Tell me what a portrait is. Yes, it is a picture of a person. (Show a Self-portrait with Uncombed Hair by Picasso). Who do you think this might be and why? Yes, it is Picasso himself. What do we call a picture of ourselves? Good, a self-portrait. (Show Lola, the artist's Sister by Picasso). Who do you think this is a portrait of and why? Very good, it is the artist's sister. (Show Le Gourmet by Picasso). What about this portrait? Good, it could be his daughter or just a girl he sees... What colors do you see in all of Picasso works? They are all fairly muted right? What colors did you see in the gallery today by Mr. Anthony? Good, bright colors. There were also many art pieces that included words. What words do you remember seeing? Why do you think Mr. Anthony used so many words? Good. We are going to tie the two together and let you be creative in coming up with your own idea of a portrait. Keep in mind the difference in colors used. Words were bright and very colorful and the portrait was darker and somewhat muted in color. There must be words included somewhere in your portrait. You don't have to draw yourself; you can draw someone else in the room or someone from your family, like we saw in the paintings by Picasso. It is up to you to create a piece of artwork to be put in a museum. What do most pieces of art have around them when they are in a museum? Yes, frames. When you go back to your classrooms, you are going to create frames for your artwork so they can be hung up. Why do we hang artwork? Good, we want to enjoy them and share them with other people. When your artwork has a frame and is hung up in your museum, the people who see it can appreciate it.

Activity
|
In Gallery: Have discussion about the works from the show. Discuss how there were lots of words used. Show students the artwork by Picasso and examples of some of his portraits. (Short discussion about portraiture). The students will then create a portrait of their choice using words alone or with an image of a person.
In Classroom: The students will be given a demonstration of how to create a frame for their artwork. They will then frame their piece and hang it in their museum.
