David Stevens's visual language is both abstract and iconic. His images are large-scale counterparts to chapters in a book of hoursa project that has occupied a decade of his artistic production. The works on paper, each layered to suggest overlapping pages, explore symbols of the religiouspeople, places, objects, and eventsboth collectively recognizable and personal to the artist. Layered, cropped, and isolated, They allude to crosses, portraits, sacred vessels, and holy cities. Stephens's subjects, in turn, become part of a quilt of design, an asymmetrical textile of pattern and color. Hung from a single armature, unlike in size, the sheets are variously positioned one above the other; the flaps of paper repeat subjects and patternslike a mantra. Revealing and obscuring parts of each sheet, Stephens constantly reconfigures the image's integrity and center.
