Local Instruction

Local Instruction is a project of communal education where visitors help assemble an open resource of shared information and skills. The project allows visitors to become both educators and pupils in a participatory space informed by performance, dialogue and encounter. Local Instruction is led by members of The St. Claire, a Philadelphia-based arts organization devoted to providing a platform for experimental modes of communication that support critical inquiry with a local perspective.

Local Instruction will take place every Wednesday – Saturday from 2-5pm in The Galleries’ Window on Race project space.

Show-and-Share
Lecture Series

This weekly series of show-and-tell-style events features open, skill-share lessons – led by Philadelphia-based artists, curators, writers, filmmakers and other cultural producers - on a wide range of topics.

Show-and-Share will take place at 6pm every Thursday evening in the exhibition's Hub Space.

Impossible Buildings & Contested Futures Walking Tours

Organized in partnership with Hidden City Philadelphia, an organization that celebrates the power of place to inspire social action, Impossible Buildings & Contested Futures is a series of walking tours that contextualizes the city’s social, political, historical and physical landscape.

This program has been supported in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the Federal-State partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Warrior Writers Performance

Warrior Writers is a Philadelphia-based, veteran-focused arts organization that fosters artistic exploration and expression through casual, welcoming workshops and retreats that encourage and support healing and community building. By using art as a tool for transformation, Warrior Writers helps to bridge the gap between veterans and civilians by creating a culture that articulates veterans' experiences, provides a peer-supported, safe, and creative community for artistic expression, and bears witness to the lived experiences and truths of warriors. The creative works produced in Warrior Writer’s writing and art-making workshops are shared with the public in the form of books, performances, and exhibitions that provide opportunities for the broader public to better understand veterans’ experiences.

As a civic extension of this event, Moore students will lead a month-long, citywide Art Supply Drive to collect art materials for use in Warrior Writer workshops.

Public Conversations

A series of informal conversations led by area artists, activists, students, scholars and cultural producers on themes relevant to the exhibition.

Living Design | Tues. 2/5 @ 6pm
This conversation features a dialogue about the ever-changing relationship between design and everyday life, from politics to social organization.

Local Action | Tues. 2/12 @ 6pm
What does it mean to work locally? This conversation unpacks the concept of “the local” (and, by extension, “the global”) as it relates to socially engaged practices of various disciplines.

Manifestations of Resistance | Tues. 2/19 @ 6pm
What is the role of culture in social struggles, war, and protest? This conversation will explore how artistic methodologies can be used towards the production of social change, and how forms of activism, in turn, can become part of one’s personal cultural practice.

Film Screenings

Living as Form (The Nomadic Version) is an unprecedented, international project exploring over twenty years of cultural works that blur art and everyday life, and emphasize participation, dialogue, and community engagement. Co-organized by Creative Time and Independent Curators International (ICI), and assembled in collaboration with The Galleries at Moore.

Living as Form (The Nomadic Version) is the flexible, expanding iteration of Living as Form, an exhibition curated by Nato Thompson and presented by Creative Time in the fall of 2011 in New York City. Lead project support for the original Living as Form exhibition was provided by the Annenberg Foundation, the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, the Danish Consulate, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Mondriaan Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Rockefeller Brothers Fund. Additional support for Living as Form (The Nomadic Version) was provided by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation; the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts; the Robert Sterling Clark Foundation; and the ICI Board of Trustees.
