Robert Goodman makes large-scale paintings that combine geometric swaths and lines of color built up with layers of paint on canvas overlaid with gestural brushstrokes. Navigating tensions between abstraction and representation, Goodman’s work conveys a layering and compression of time, space and place. InNet2008, a new 28-ft painting, ebullient color appears to recede and advance into the web-like network of black and white lines creating a push/pull between color and space. The canvas pulses with the struggle between fear and optimism over the unraveling and potential collapse of stability and order.
